Before you leave

Ask these questions first.

A serious seller can answer most basic questions directly. Ask before arranging a viewing.

01

How old are the bike and battery?

The battery may have been replaced more recently than the bike. Ask about both ages and a receipt for any replacement.

02

How has the bike been used?

Daily commuting wears a bike differently from occasional leisure rides. Also ask where the battery was stored.

03

What maintenance has been done?

Ask for workshop receipts and repairs to the motor, display, brakes, chain, gears or electronics.

04

Why is it being sold?

The answer is not decisive, but should fit the age, condition, mileage and advert.

Biggest financial risk

The battery deserves
extra attention.

A full display gauge only proves the battery is charged. It does not show how much energy it can still store.

01

Ask for a battery test

A bike shop report is more useful than a promised range. Without one, allow for greater uncertainty.

02

Inspect battery and connection

Look for cracks, moisture, corrosion, damaged contacts and poor casing fit. The battery must click in without force.

03

Use the original charger

Check that plug and cable are intact and charging starts without errors. A plug that fits does not prove it is the right charger.

04

Ask about replacement

Check whether a compatible replacement battery is still available. Older or uncommon systems may make this difficult or expensive.

Inspect the whole bike

Six areas that reveal a lot.

01

Frame & fork

Look for cracks, dents, unusual welds and paint damage around joints. Crooked handlebars may indicate a fall.

02

Wheels & tyres

Lift and spin each wheel. It should run straight. Check hubs and headset for sideways play.

03

Brakes

Levers should not touch the handlebars. Discs should be straight; rims, pads and cables should not look worn out.

04

Chain & sprockets

Look for rust, sharp teeth and skipping. Heavy e-bikes can wear out the drivetrain faster.

05

Display & controls

Test buttons, lights and all modes. Warning codes or intermittent power while moving need investigation.

06

Keys & accessories

Check battery keys, frame lock, charger and spare keys. Agree exactly what is included.

The test ride

Ride further than
one quick lap.

Start without assistance and build up gently. This makes unexpected behaviour easier to feel and hear.

  1. 01

    Start without the motor

The bike should roll, steer and brake normally. Electric assistance does not fix mechanical problems.

  2. 02

    Try every assistance mode

Assistance should engage smoothly and stop when you stop pedalling. Watch for interruptions or errors.

  3. 03

    Test under load

If possible, ride up a slope or bridge. Listen for clicking, scraping, knocking or an uneven motor sound.

  4. 04

    Brake firmly and change gears

Test each brake separately somewhere safe. Try all gears and check the chain does not skip.

Your progressTake your time with the list. A short test ride alone is not enough.

This check helps you inspect carefully but is not a technical inspection or guarantee. If unsure, ask a bike shop to assess the e-bike.
